thecentre:mk are the top green shopping centre in the UK
thecentre:mk have been recognised for groundbreaking sustainability initiatives, being ranked 15th in the UK as one of The Sunday Times Best Green Companies. thecentre:mk also picked up two awards for Best Small firm with higher environmental impact and Outstanding environmental performance.
The Sunday Times list, published on 12 June 2011 listed thecentre:mk 15th the only shopping centre recognised in the UK, above retail giants B&Q and Marks and Spencer for green impact and credentials in environmental policy and training. thecentre:mk moved up four places from the 2010 listing, as new initiatives were introduced throughout the course of the year, particularly addressing the upgrade of centre managements office, green credentials.
The Sunday Times best green companies supplement credits the centres work, “Creative initiatives by thecentre:mk prove that retail therapy doesn’t have to cost the earth. The firm smashed government recycling goals ahead of its 2012 target and new bins now cater for up to eight tons of waste a week in its bid to raise on-site recycling levels from 60% to 75%.”
thecentre:mk has implemented a number of green initiatives across all aspects of the business, working with retail partners on dry, plastic and food waste as well as implementing systems in the centre management offices to promote the sustainability of light and water usage, helping to reduce the overall carbon footprint by 12% year on year.
Not only has the centre been recognised by the Sunday Times in the Green awards this year, but staff also regard the environmental initiatives in place very highly. thecentre:mk employees agreed that the centre ‘always does what is best for the environment’ and as a result returned a top 10 positive green score of 84%, employees also indicated that the centre management ‘always lead in its approach to environmental projects’.
Carl Meale, Technical Services Manager at thecentre:mk collected the awards at the ceremony “We were incredibly honoured to be so highly recognised by The Sunday Times best green companies, ranking so highly and being the only shopping centre in the UK recognised in the list. 2011 has been an interesting year for the centres sustainability projects, we flooded our centre management offices with various ways of reducing our carbon footprint and moving into 2012 we look forwards to expanding on these exciting projects in line with our evolving retail landscape.”
