Mini-MRF

Published: Monday, 24 May, 2010

Regional shopping destination thecentre:mk, is aiming to break 75% of onsite recycling with the introduction of a new Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) and new recycling bins on the mall.

thecentre:mk is already known for its environmental initiatives after being named top retail company in the 2009 Sunday Times Green Companies list and breaking government recycling targets four years ahead of schedule in 2008. The MRF will help sort general waste removing aluminium cans, steel cans, mixed plastics, paper and card. It is expected that up to eight tons of waste per week will be channelled through the MRF helping to raise thecentre:mk’s recycling to 75% onsite recycling.

Dan Murphy, Head of Operations for thecentre:mk commented on the scheme, “The introduction of the MRF is a major step forward for thecentre:mk’s green initiatives. In the past few years we have installed a Bio-Diesel plant, broken government recycling targets and worked extensively with all our staff on the importance of our recycling schemes.

We currently recycle around 60% of waste onsite and currently none of our waste go’s direct to landfill; however, the MRF will allow us to target recyclables which may have otherwise been missed. To aid the process the recycling bins have been redesigned each with red tops, echoing the red bin bag scheme of Milton Keynes Council where all recycling should be placed. Rather than getting our visitors to sort their waste into different categories the MRF will allow our staff to do that after collection.”
